As the topic says I think I ran over a pigeon. I thought it would fly away as I was coming down the hill. It did... but not until the last second. I look into my rear view mirror and saw some feathers floating in the air.

I feel bad now.

I hit a kookaburra on bobbin head road, it flew across the car and BOOM! I felt pretty bad, but i guess its better than crashing you car.

I went on an advanced driver course a little while back, and one of the things they taught was that you should never swerve for wildlife (esp on highways/travelling at higher speeds), as it often results in nasty accidents.

Of course, this is easier said than done, as your first reaction will always be to swerve to avoid wildlife.

That being said, I'm not sure I could ever not swerve to avoid wildlife, even if I thought swerving might cause an accident

i hit a galah going down my main highway at 90km/h and i stopped right away because i thought i killed the poor thing!!

but with relief 6 seconds later it flew away..

I've been "lucky" enough to have been able to test this out... I had a kangaroo jump out from some bushes, and into the path of my car. I was actually very surprised that I jumped on the brakes hard but didn't swerve to avoid the collision, and also managed to have the sense of mind to get off the brakes after impact so the car behind me didn't run up my arse. I then put the indicator on and pulled over... It was good to know that my natural reaction happened to be the correct one as we had a full car on the way to the snow
You are right though, never swerve for wildlife. Cars are replaceable but going off the road is always guaranteed to end in tears.

I have managed to hit afew things, it all started with a possum on my L's. Then a cat, then the roo, then a flock of birds. I then sold that particular car.

I keep telling myself dont swerve. Now its in my head . Ive done one cat, 2 possums and a rabbit. None in the xr thank god haha..

I almost hit an emu in my XR4, was trying to convince my wife that the car was really safe and stable at 160kms on a quiet/private country road... Two of the buggers wander out on to the side of the road. They go left then go right then at the last second decide to run right in front of the car. Just pulled up in time!

At least I proved the brakes were really good!

i took out a family of ducks on a blind corner once...  have hit many foxes and a number of wallabies/roos.   been close recently to two cows, a number of deer and a wombat!!   yet to hit any domestic animals...

had nowhere to run crispy...  i think 1 baby and a young adult survived but i couldn't stop and go back as it was a busy road and on a blind corner...
